MASKS INITIAIVE

The FashionAFRICANA Masks Initiative was created to provide a social connection through the fabric of our culture and raise the awareness of health disparities impacting people of African descent. As we know, globally, communities of color are at higher risk for health and economic challenges due to COVID-19. We know that COVID-19 does not affect everyone equally.

GOALS OF THE INITIATIVE

  • To provide an alternative, more sustainable approach in the form of re-usable masks

  • To support jobs for creatives of the African diaspora that are losing work and becoming more vulnerable every day in the wake of an economic and healthcare crisis

  • To reduce excess fabric and waste fabric by re-purposing it into making needed supplies

  • To connect the world through positive solutions that allow communities of color to help uplift themselves and uplift each other.

FestivalAFRICANA will also include health and wellness, COVID-19 money management, professional development webinars, performers and webinars empowering Black teens.

In the US, exposing inequalities in the health and economic systems have

  • The CDC recommends that all Americans wear face coverings in public to help stem the spread of the coronavirus. Yet, many people of color are unable to comply due to a variety of reasons including unaffordability.

  • We know that COVID-19 is particularly dangerous for people who are older or have serious underlying medical conditions, and young and relatively healthy people are also vulnerable to infection and transmission are also vulnerable.  People who are lower-income tend to live in concentrated areas or maybe have a home situation where they cannot isolate themselves increasing their risks.

 Integrity and responsibility.
